Side Effects

Risks and Side Effects of Ketamine

The clinician administers ketamine via an IV infusion, a common medical procedure. However, starting an IV may cause minor discomfort from the needle stick, bruising, infiltration (medication leaking into surrounding tissue), or, in rare cases, infection. Some individuals might also feel faint during the process.

Ketamine therapy can significantly and temporarily alter your mental state, often leading to unique effects on both the mind and body. While many find relief from psychiatric symptoms through ketamine treatment, it doesn’t work for everyone, which can leave some individuals feeling discouraged if the therapy is not effective for them.

Common Side Effects

These side effects may occur in about 1 in 10 people:

  • Euphoria or intense excitement
  • Sensation of floating or out-of-body Experience
  • Strange or vivid dreams
  • Anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Hallucinations
  • Drowsiness

  • Disorientation

Uncommon Side Effects

These side effects may happen in less than 1 out of every 100 people:

  • Jerky arm movements
  • Double vision
  • Fast eye movements
  • Flashbacks
  • Low mood or suicidal thoughts
  • Delirium
  • Rash, pain and redness in the injection site
  • Increased pressure in the eyes

  • Cystitis of the bladder (inflammation and ulcers)

Severe side effects, such as allergic reactions, can potentially be life-threatening. However, research has not documented any deaths resulting from these side effects when ketamine is administered in smaller doses for depression treatment.

Addiction to Ketamine

Low-dose ketamine therapy does not pose a significant risk of addiction. However, frequent recreational use of ketamine carries a low to moderate risk of dependency. It is important to only use ketamine under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
